The Lost 8 – the biggest mystery of the Baltic Sea disaster

Trailer: in 1994, the passenger ferry “Estonia” sinks, taking 852 people to their graves. During the next weeks, eight Estonian crew members appear on survivors’ lists, but will never return home. Did they make it out alive? How did the names appear on those lists? People in several countries are still looking for answers. The families remain hopeful.
We set out to establish a trustworthy papertrail and separate facts from fiction.

Clip: 29 years later, official documents are released from the Swedish police, indicating that several of the 8 survived. The policeman handling the case at that time is perplexed.

Clip: the most prominent of the 8 persons was one of the ship’s captains, Avo Piht, who was onboard as a passenger. News or rumours of his alleged survival started making the rounds the very next day. During the years, the disappearance of captain Avo Piht becomes the second big question regarding the “Estonia” disaster, alongside the myriad [conspiracy and otherwise] theories about the reason for the ship’s sinking.

Clip: one of the “8 lost survivors” was Ago Tomingas. For years, he was thought to have survived because of a photo of him exiting a rescue helicopter. We take the photo to another Estonian, who was the one actually depicted.
